CONTEXT
My graphics personal investigation project is focused on magazines, ultimately delivering a unique skateboard fanzine "with a twist". Skateboarders are often regarded as "casual, cool yet somewhat anti establishment" with an attitude of "I'm skating here regardless of the consequences". I wanted to explore and combine this theme with graphical influences from another iconic anti establishment movement of the 70s/80s – punk rock.
Punk rock fanzines are deliberately informal, but really provocative with all their "imperfections" of frequently used hand drawn imagery. This often divides opinion but is highly communicative – you instantly love it or loathe it. I have taken inspiration from expert artists in this field such as David Carson and Jamie Reid to include such techniques in my work. I then seek to combine and contrast, this punk retro style "imperfectionist" imagery with the "perfection" of a skateboarder practising and honing their tricks over and over again.
Further influences include other retro imagery such as analogue, vintage, B&W TVs, plus considering how skateboarders get their "perfect" look from detailed analysis of the iconic skateboarder wear brand Supreme. This continues my "perfect / imperfect" contrast exploration.
The overall aesthetic behind the final outcome is a balanced mix between DIY, punk and skateboarding. (2021)
